Organizational Information

Purpose of your Position - Non Union
The Fleet Services Supervisor manages the Corporate Vehicle and Equipment Fleet including procurement and maintenance and repair. The supervisor ensures that the most appropriate vehicles and equipment are acquired and maintained in keeping with diverse operational needs, performance requirements, best value, corporate vision and within city financial resources. They also manage the third party parts and service procurement and third party car share program.

Manage an efficient, effective and sustainable corporate fleet system:
  • Procure and maintain vehicle and equipment that meets operational and corporate needs.
  • Continually review business and consult managers on creative solutions to improve their business.
  • Deliver best practices business solutions and excellent customer service to meet performance targets.
  • Manage AVL program and daily operations of the third-party parts and service program.

Sustainability:
  • Investigate alternate technologies to ensure fuel and greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions targets are achieved.
  • Continually monitor the fleet utilization to ensure that the right equipment is used for the job intended.
  • Investigate and implement programs including educational that results in fuel use and GHG reductions.
  • Review and manage changes to the fleet preventive maintenance program to obtain maximum cost efficiency and equipment availability.

Budget:
  • Review of all fleet equipment to determine that capital reserve is sufficient for fleet replacement.
  • Provide advice to managers and supervisors on innovative solutions to provide best value.
  • Strategically plan equipment renewal to minimize cost, environmental impact and equipment down time.
  • Develop maintenance management systems that protect a $27 million asset.
  • Annual review of capital and operational budgets to ensure budget sustainability for annual operations. Operating budget: $3,750,000 Capital budget: $3,747,000 Shared x Final spending authority – Manager, Infrastructure Operations

Annual Equipment Procurement:
  • Participate in the investigation and writing of fleet specification for tendering process.
  • Meet with all user groups to ensure proper equipment is purchased meeting corporate objectives.
  • Liaison with equipment manufactures ensuring clear understanding of equipment being sought.
  • Review of all tender packages and recommend purchases to Senior Management and Purchasing.

Manage human resources:
  • 12 direct reports, develop a strong team culture and operate mechanics shop in a business-like manner.
  • Develop, inspire, hire, assess, discipline and reward employees.
  • Conduct annual employee performance reviews.
  • Oversee third party parts contract.
Credentials - Union
Knowledge - Non Union
Mechanic Interprovincial Red Seal certification plus, Business Diploma or Certified Fleet Management accreditation and 7 years’ fleet management environment experience. Strong knowledge of the NFPA National Fire Protection Association 1071 Standards for Emergency Vehicle Technician Professional Qualifications. Strong understanding of the Corporate Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) Management System. Technical knowledge, business management, city policies, departmental budgeting, planning, customer service, vendor negotiations, health and safety regulations and governmental regulations. (e.g. vehicle and equipment repair trades certification; air brake certification, asset management, and several years of extensive knowledge in equipment operations to ensure productivity.
