Picture yourself as a Building Inspector/ Plan Checker with a municipality striving to be the best mid-sized City in North America. Using your related experience, you will examine plans and authorize construction for residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects, subdivision, lot development, and site grading/drainage work. You will conduct site inspections of works and subdivision development to ensure compliance with BC Building Codes and City approved subdivision bylaws and guidelines.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in customer service, conflict resolution, and use a balanced approach and mature judgment in decision making.
Duties - Union
  • Reviews building plans for compliance to building codes, fire codes, zoning bylaw, development permits, legal documents registered against the property, building bylaws, sign bylaws and various other City regulations and policies.
  • Compiles non-conforming items on building permits applications and provides revisions required to the plans for compliance to the regulations.
  • Issues and monitors building permits and occupancy permits.
  • Ensures appropriate fees are being collected.
  • Provides onsite inspections for compliance to various building codes, standards and bylaws and produces a written inspection report(s) outlining deficiencies; follows up for compliance; inputs inspection data to communicate status.
  • Enforces illegal construction and related bylaw violations; issues stop work orders.
  • Responds to phone, email and in-person inquiries from the public and staff regarding City bylaws, building code requirements and the status of plans in the review process; problem-solves issues to expedite timely processing, inspection and release of building permits.
  • Serves as a technical resource to the public and other City staff. Interprets and ensures consistent application of BC Building Code, bylaws and other regulatory requirements, including providing professional assessments and evaluations.
  • Applies effective conflict resolution skills in dealing with sensitive issues, public complaints and enforcing BC Building Code and City bylaw compliance.
  • Maintains expertise by keeping updated with changes and technological innovations in the building industry; attends training courses to attain and maintain Registered Building Official designation.
  • Provides a leadership role to other Building Inspector/Plan Checker Staff.
  • Performs work safely and in accordance with all health and safety regulations, policies and safe work procedures.
