The Mechanic Shop Foreman supervises a team of mechanics and other service staff that repair andmaintain a wide variety of fleet cars, trucks and industrial construction equipment, as well as
specialized firefighting apparatus and parks machinery. The Foreman plans, organizes and supervisesthe operation of the City’s central mechanical repair and maintenance facility, including coordinating,scheduling and overseeing mechanical and welding/fabrication work that is completed in fieldlocations.
Duties - Union
  • Plans, organizes, develops, implements and coordinates preventative maintenance work schedules; supervises staff to ensure appropriate assignment priorities, a high quality of work and a safe work environment.
  • Provides guidance, instruction and direction to staff engaged in the repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles, machinery and equipment;
  • Provides input to the Supervisor to develop the annual budget submission, monitors expenditures; maintains inventory control and other records; prepares various reports.
  • Researches new methods, services and equipment to improve the operation; prepares cost estimates; recommends equipment purchases. Researches, recommends and participates in courses that are required to learn new and continuously changing trades technologies.
  • Responds to service enquiries from staff and client department managers; deals with parts dealers and suppliers regarding warranty and other service issues; responds to various service complaints.
  • Authorizes work to be contracted out to various external shops and dealers in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Periodically performs troubleshooting, electronic diagnostics, servicing, preventive maintenance and repairs in both the shop and in the field. (the core duties of Mechanic classification).
  • Operates a computer as well as all tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Completes various administrative duties including work invoices, time records, safety review notes, etc.
